Chapter Six

Lilah woke up with a smile on her face. She had a date. With Garrett James. She couldn’t count the number of times she’d thought of him over the past year. His goodbye to her in the hospital had been terse and full of worry—for both of them. She hadn’t yet decided to leave Danny and Garrett had been angry. Or worried. Or some combination of both.

She’d always lamented that she hadn’t been able to let him know that Danny was long gone. Had he been at the trial? She’d have to remember to ask.

Two a.m. had come with a dream that left her moaning and highly aroused. It started with Garrett’s kiss and ended with her naked. His body was largely a blur. What did he look like without his shirt? Or his pants? The hard muscles of his chest and strong arms holding her tight were all she had to go on. That and some cursory research online about prosthetic legs. How much of him was tattooed? And would she find out?

A scan of her apartment on her way out the door left her feeling insecure. It was a tiny place, though it was all hers. The sofa, the dresser, the coffee table, and the lamps were from Goodwill and though they were in good condition, they were obviously used and mismatched. She had a few pictures: her parents on vacation in San Diego a few years before their deaths, a print of the Seattle skyline, and the cover of her first book. The kitchen was barely large enough for two people, but it worked well enough for her. Only her bed was new and luxurious. Yasmin had bought her one of the best mattresses on the market, and though Lilah had protested the expense, she did love it. The television was Yasmin’s doing as well. Her former college roommate, now a successful corporate lawyer, had taken a month off from work to stay with Lilah while she recovered and had refused to be without her soap operas.

Now, almost a year after leaving Danny, her job paid her enough to live on, and even allowed her to save a bit. She used her royalties for entertainment money, but she didn’t consider herself flush with cash. After being dependent on Danny for everything, the idea of spending money on frivolous things like new furniture and artwork didn’t sit well. Her one splurge was the eight-hundred-thread-count sheets. If she did let Garrett into her space, at least they’d be comfortable in bed. If he didn’t run first.

She didn’t need much and had never been self-conscious about her place before. But her friends knew her history and she rarely invited anyone over. Her space was her own. Sacred. Her little sanctuary, even if it was plain. After living with Danny for years and being surrounded by his things, she’d had a hard time figuring out what she liked. So far, she knew she hated pink. Purple was better. Green was best.
